Some comments in a thread I was reading got me to thinking about the comment "If they did it once, they'll do it again."
What do you think? Do you think this is a blanket statement that covers all sins? Do you think it applies to only certain sins? What sins? How do you make a determination as to what this statement applies to? Do you consider that God can grasp a person's heart and turn them around, and that once was all it took, and that they will never do it again?
Curious as to what others think.

I voted for maybe. While humans tend to sin and sin tends to trap, God is far more powerful than any sin. I think humans and their relationship with God are way too complicated for most blanket statements. The only ones that I truly believe are that we are all sinners by both nature and choice, God is always holy, just and loving. Other statements maybe true and follow these. But these are the basis for what we believe as Christians.

Depends on who "they" are.
If they are non-Christians who don't have the Holy Spirit to lead, guide and convict them of sin, then yes, they'll likely continue to do it until they are too old and feeble to do it anymore.
Remorseful, repentant Christians who have been convicted by the Holy Spirit, on the other hand, will turn from their sin and stop.

I voted for "once does not mean always." Just because a person commits a sin once does not necessarily mean they'll do it again.

Well, human nature is human nature. How many of us here have done the same sin over and over, but yet are God fearing and Christ Loving people....

We all are familiar with the scriptures, him without sin cast the first stone. This scripture in some form applys to this post.
For the most part, i think many people have learned from certain things and wont do them again.
For example: I have to close friends who have served time in prison for MURDER and what did the Lord do in their lives after they arrived there? LOVE, they was shown love and God's saving GRACE.
I firmly believe in my heart, even though they only did it once, that they will never do it again. Doesn't mean it couldn't happen, but I dont think they will do it.

The Lord can and does change people's hearts so just because someone does something (i.e. anything once) does not mean they will continue for ever repeating the same sin - thankfully.
((((((( Thank the Lord for His grace and mercy ))))))). There is definitely hope.

I've been told, and I believe it to be true, that one you open the door to something, and it enters into your life, your mind, your heart, it makes it easier for that thing to come back inside subsequently, since you gave it permission to come in and mark its territory.
As such, I voted "maybe." It depends, IMO. If it's a sin, it depends if there's repentance and continual dependence on God afterwards.

Thank you for the replies.
The comment that initially caused me to make this post was "Once a cheater, always a cheater" but then I got to thinking about any kind of sin. Once you do drugs, will you always do drugs? Once you get drunk (if it's not a horrible experience), that automatically makes you an alcoholic for life. Once you steal something, you are always a thief and will steal for the rest of your life. If you look at porn and it has it's intended affect on you, you are forever addicted.
The list can go on and on.
I agree that once we have a taste of something that gives us pleasure, it becomes a stumbling block for us. But I also agree that we need to constantly be on the watch. And not only for things that have become these stumbling blocks, but anything that could become a stumbling block.

NO. God can change anybody. For the unbeliever to become a believer, then He has changed them into a new creation, "old things having passed away.."
Now the flip side is that many claim to have changed. Those are just words. To know whether they have changed or not, watch their actions.
If their actions line up with their words, they have indeed changed. It's not a short term change just to get them out of trouble but and enduring change that lasts.

I am truly grathful to God he doesn't look on us in the same way we sometimes look at each other -- as "unsavable". Instead He sent his son, Jesus to offer atonement for all who had sinned and lost their way because he did see us worthy and capable of being saved.
Sure, there are some so that will seek their own way but since ALL of us have sinned and fallen short of the glory and those cases we use discernment -- but for those who turn TO Jesus and accept the gift that can, YES, they can walk away from their sins considered "blameless".
As for the types of sins, I tend to think that say God can't redeem this kind of sin or that kind of sin, well, puts God in a very small box. I believe God can and does extend grace to those "we" think are unredeemable. Whether it be addictions, greed, waywardness or just flat-out times of rebellion if we stand judging everyone that comes to the table -- how much hope are we offering watching world when we judge our own and when they may be 10x10 worse than the ones they see being judged. It breaks my heart if we keep one person away from God's grace because judging others and having total amensia from where we came before we surrendered to Christ.

I voted 'Yes' with a caveat. My cousin(a pastor)commented, from his experience, one lives as he dies. Obviously, specifics are hard to judge and 'once' a trend doesn't make but over time and experience probably a trend will become more apparent. As that sage Gomer Pyle said, 'Fool me once shame on you; fool me twice shame on me.'

I voted 'maybe' simply because of all the 'it depends' in the various situations. I think once we sin, the next time is generally easier - yet again, "it depends" on the situation.

I agree, for instance one of my sister who is married to a non-believer, is going through shall I say "rough patch" but this rough patch has been ever since she has been married to him, he is very mentally abusive to her, and sometimes physically, she got pregnant hoping that would change him, and it did for awhile, then it started again, she left him for a few days but he promised it would never happen again, and yet again the endless cycle.
I believe that if you have God, he can help you really change, you can't do it without God, but you can't do it with just God, you have to put forth an effort also to try and change.
