I was talking to some people who were sitting at our table on Sunday at the church Thanksgiving celebration and I was reminiscing about back when my specialty was the "brown-and-serve-rolls." Yep, everyone would bring something and that was what I always brought. I still use the brown-and-serve-rolls too. Call me lazy.

Beckey, I actually prefer those brown and serve rolls! They are warm and soft on the inside and slightly crisp on the outside. That's what we use too, and I love them.

One of these years (not this one) I will learn how to make some really yummy yeast rolls from scratch.

We did that one year, thinking they would be so much better. I did bread in the bread maker before too. It was good, but we all missed the brown and serve ones...lol.

I always liked brown 'n serve rolls.

Now we use Sister Schuberts, which are the closest we have found to homemade.

We don't have rolls very often, just Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Yikes!!! I just looked at my grocery receipt and I paid $5.18 for a pkg of bagels. No fancy brand either, it was the stores generic brand. Guess I'm going to have to give that up unless I find them cheaper somewhere.

I don't even like pretzels. I'm trying to get Mrs. K to leave them out of the Chex Mix.

I am having Thanksgiving on an army base this year, but if I was home I would want to cook. I make the best turkey I have ever had and I like all my side dishes too. And I like brown-n-serve rolls also. I make Thanksgiving the way my great aunt always did, and if I were "home" for Thanksgiving I would eat at her house.

I really feel like I'm cheating a bit here. I bought a container of celery and onion already chopped up. I know, what an imposter, she can't even chop up her own celery and onions for the dressing. Oh well, at least it will mean less work for me, less dishes to wash, etc. I just hope it tastes as good.

A skunk sprayed somewhere near the house last night. I haven't checked Zoe (our dog) yet, but I hope she didn't get it. I woke up about 5 am and it STANK in the house. Then I kept waking up to the same nasty smell. I really, really, really, REALLY dislike skunks. I'm not even pleased by Peppy Le Pew anymore. Little stinkers.

Hi Becky!

So sorry about the smell!

Well this year will be be first Thanksgiving turkey that I am making! I went to Whole Foods for a once a year treat to a free range turkey. Gonna brine the bird tomorrow morning in a buttermilk brine. I went all William Sonoma this year and got me a brine mix there. I'm also making the dressing and side roasted veggies. Mom is making the mashed taters, cranberry sauce and yams. She she feels useless if she didn't make anything. lol

I have a confession to make.

In all my years of living, I have never cooked a turkey.

I sure have eaten a lot of them, though.
Well, uhm . . . not whole turkeys, mind you, a leg and thigh here, a leg and thigh there . . . you know how it goes.

Trishy - have fun with your first turkey cooking!
Perhaps you could use Beckey's phone number as a "how-to" hotline.

Kerr, this tidbit of information is certainly quite very interesting. But I'm trying to figure out why you decided to share this with us at this particular point in the thread. What am I missing?

We started today. We've got a pumpkin cheesecake done and cooling. We are doing most of it since its at our house. We usually don't have rolls that I remember.

At what point do you feel that I should have shared it.

(Actually, my aging brain thought that Beckey had paid $5.18 for a bag of pretzels, which would only make sense if she was at Auntie Anne's, in which case it would be worth it.)

LOL!

Actually, that's what I thought had happened (minus the aging brain thing).

I just thought it would be a whole lot funner to pick on you about it rather than quietly let it go.

AND it was.

LOL! I noticed, but I figured it was just old-timers brain.

Thanks for picking on him SharMar, I got a good giggle out of it.

Beckey, if your turkey is not defrosted what do you do? I want to defrost it in the sink but everything says to totally submerge it and our sink is not big enough. Any help?

LOL, I did you one better! Not only does my package have the onions and celery already chopped up but it also has the herbs already mixed in it!!! I was looking for just the veggies but all they had was the mix.

I'm quite a bit ahead. I've mixed up the sweet potato bake, the mashed potato bake, made the sausage and the cornbread for the stuffing. Tonight I will boil the eggs for the devilled eggs, make jalapeno poppers and sausage balls. All I will have to do tomorrow is the turkey, corn and carrots!! My sil is bringing a ham and rolls; my eldest is bring the pies.

I thought about that but we've had a bit of a plumbing problem and I really don't want to put the turkey in there.

I usually slather mine with butter.... I've never had a dry turkey yet....

This is the first year that I won't be cooking anything!

I usually just cook it longer ....I just make sure the meat thermometer thing reads the right temp before I take it out of the oven. Which reminds me, I need to borrow mom's meat thermometer thingy.
