In the northern regions, we are all so pleased that Spring is upon us What a joyful time to glory in the Glory of the Lord! In gratitude, I just penned the praise below, while listening to "Yahweh You are Near" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bsc-T5edJrU&feature=related Yahweh, Melter of the snowy, Crusher of glaciers, sin, and despair, Giver of hope everlasting, You boost our faith from nothingness! Oh, Bringer of Spring to lives and greenless hearts, morning praises You! A multitude will peer from happy windows, because your sun orchestrates trees, fields, and the swaying, windy country roads to the beat of Joy Unending, our sploshing, happy boots imprimaturing wet lawns with your waving approval. Laughing birds affirm your tickled Majesty.

There's wording that lends itself to a powerful imagery of prayer in Dougie MacLean's song, "Talking with My Father": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SGQnaucM_-M Here are the lyrics to look at while you listen to the song: http://www.dougiemaclean.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=151&Itemid=101 Some of my favorite lines: “In this place of harmony and wonder and values not of gold fulfill”. - where neither fire nor moth destroy “He says don't fix what is not broken no need to find what's not been lost” – because we are restored and found “I don't need to look any further for the one I have become” – The Image of the Fahter is in His Son, Jesus, and we are accepted in Him

Seems I'm predisposed to write thoughts just before a church service. This poem is from this morning: City on a Hill “Membership due”—I blinked as I read it, All of life is like this, time running out, I look to the hills for my contentment; these will be here, beyond the merchant’s shout. CHORUS And it is clear You are there, calling Moses to come to care for we sheep who are weary and worn. There on the ledges, in the air, windy hedges say Eternity has got our backs. The things that we do are so necessary, how faith makes them works is a mystery. But up on the mountain, I see tree, I see forest; You tell us to use them for references. A shimmering dew glistens ‘round on that mountain, like some chosen city that never pays bills. The people inside sing, “How great a salvation!”, Oh, may Adonai reign and do as He wills.

Paradigms, we need them even when we’re right. The faith walk requires a shifting within the wide realm of truth. Narrow is the Way, but with the Lord, nothing is impossible. This movement is needed because life is on a creative glide. Failure to grow from glory to glory means our vision is stunted, our gait stumbling. Pride will often make us think otherwise. Why are we genetically afraid of change? There are so many reasons: fear, protection, doubt; these are the kindred spirits of the Fall. May we walk in the faith of Jesus which He, Messiah, has given us. He is on the cutting edge. Grant us, oh Lord, a shrewd peace and contentment, the kind that rests while discovering who we are, in You, all with those to whom You send us. When we are about the Lord’s business, we are too involved in the work to notice the shifts. When the Lord is changing us and others, this is true Life. A song with the Prayer of St. Francis embedded leads us this way: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vBa-adDIQKw Here are the lyrics: Where there is hatred, they sow love Where there is injury, they sow pardon Where there is friction, they sow union And error; truth, and doubt; faith Where there's despair, they sow hope Where there is darkness; light And where there is sadness; joy What's a matter you people? What's a matter you say? What's a matter you people? It's gonna be a bright, sunshiny day. Where there is love, there's also pain I do not seek to be consoled, As much as to console Or to be understood as to understand Or to be loved as to love For it is in giving, that they receive And in pardoning that they are pardoned And in dying they are born to eternal life. What's a matter you people... To save one's soul, save one's life Save one's soul, save one's life... What's a matter you people...

I'd have to say that if I'd only posted this song, Steve Bell's "Burning Ember", it's been worth it. In it, recall the admonition to always return to Jesus, our First Love! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bwXR6Qv_b8U&feature=PlayList&p=4D8E8DFB82117B57&index=23 Here are the lyrics: Judge for yourself how great is the one Who lives in God – whose God is love Like an iron when left in embers bright Everything is fire – everything is light Oh Love, how beautiful You are Oh flame of joy within my heart Burning ember I remember Love’s first light in me I was cold then Like a stone when I saw Your flickering Oh what beauty as You drew near me I could scarcely speak Somehow I knew I would be new in your glowing Judge for yourself if a fire isn’t safe When cities fall before her face Yet a flower can endure the course of a storm by bowing to the tempest’s rage Oh Love, more fierce than all the rest Oh raging joy within my breast Burning ember I remember Love’s first light in me I was cold then Like a stone when I saw Your flickering Burn forever Let me never curse the pain You bring Somehow I know I will be whole in Your burning Oh Love, more lovely than the rest Oh flame of joy within my breast Burning ember Shine forever in the darkest tomb Warmth of heaven Hidden secret in a mother’s womb Flame of beauty Blazing through me so that all might see Somehow we know We’ll all be whole in Your burning In Your burning In Your burning

In Christ Granted, I am taken to the truth, Humbled, by the power to say, “You!”, that mighty winds don’t push us back into prostration, Here I stand, for You could do no other than rescue me. Can a man be holy by assenting to your mercy, or is it something deeper, like You being merciful? Can Father say to Son, “Go and save the children”, unless the children are already known, by love? Lo—o--ove is deep, like a running river. Who among us would drink from it without sense of awe? No sooner do we cup the hand to receive the goodness, than we begin wonder at the source of Love. Jesus, hold me down, in the waters of your mercies, immerse me into the question, “Are you willing to be baptized? Let my life so answer, every day, this question, that my every motive is to give You glory!

"DEEP CALLS TO DEEP", Steve Bell. He picked up this song from believers while travelling through northern India. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rpONcA69EXs&feature=related "And at His feast I am a welcome guest" There is reason to be joyful and hopeful in a world so full of pain and despair. May the works of our hearts flow from this reconciliation with God, through Christ our Lord! . . . so that others may be touched by the reality of God in our lives, that His calling to us be theirs.

Steve Bell's "Wings of an Eagle" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=16EHmcenFu4&NR=1 The "Na-Na Factor". Praise is much more than a song, it is the totality of our lives offered up as a sacrifice unto the Lord. Paul calls it "our reasonable service". There's something about the consecrated life that eventually reveals itself in a "na-na" attitude, i.e., we will keep our heart in synch with the song from God's heart, as revealed in His Word and creation. --------------------- Before I pray for someone with a deep need, I like to listen to this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgTYeAoR1J4&NR=1

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmIcICfkvy4 - What a "hammered dulcimer" sounds like. If David had pulled out his dulcimer, it would have soothed Saul’s soul within his blue haze. Funny how the fickle heart is kind of insane! It can rule over men but cannot reign. If the Smoky Mountains had filled Saul’s eyes, his bitterness would have made him cry. He would have hid in a deep Blue Ridge cave or basked in the buttercup sun of grace. Sweetness is meant to turn the heart to the majesty of God, Who shines on the mind like rivers in morning sun. How sad the dulcimer sings, when the sinner falls among the leaves trickling onto a yearning snowmelt that rummages among pines, in dales. Hear the dulcimer of angels in the winds, reminding us the windows of heaven are not shuttered in. One string, two strings, how the heavenly hammer can make music! Will clay be clay, lament only? Or, slowly, will mold be molded to a hopeful man, and cry out to God like some mystic.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oi_tcxgUIZg&NR=1 Note: as I have read this, it becomes ever more apparent that although our "flights" surely are daring . . . these are the expressions of God-given ability and faith and joy. And we would not have known, had God not flown to us in the boldest sweep of all. Stranger wings have never flown. They are like those of eagles. And I would have never known, except for His same, bold sweep in God’s airy time. Jesus, High and Lifted Up, We, the captives, He, Son of God. By His stripes sinners fly up onto the Strong, Right Arm, to God’s Paradise. Eagles wings, born to fly, not by daring, by design. And we would have never known, except for His same, bold sweep in God’s airy time. (from Quaz's Mixed Bag of Faith)

1 John 1:8: If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. Truth as manifested on this earth, Messiah Jesus, can only abide in imperfection . . . The remainder of this chapter enjoins us to walk honestly with God to avoid sin. The "as much as possible" is implicit. We are imperfect, but Jesus has come and now abides in repentant ones through His Spirit. We glory that we have an Advocate to Whom we can confess. Let us also praise the Father that we abide in Him despite the fact that we are cracked vessels. In some miraculous way, we know we are not leaking. We are as secure as that Ark made by human hands. What made it indestructible was God's guidance and providential Hand. Imperfection is more than covered-up. It is part of the brick and mortar that is the Body. The presence of the Son holds, binds us together with Him. Our Advocate always has an airtight case! Here is an example of Truth being delivered, delivered in an imperfect and beautiful way! Notice how the crack of thunder sounds as this message crescendos; it resounds as soon as he says, "We have to allow God . . .". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tnFcz2mXC3k

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-P6nrcFWTU&feature=PlayList&p=EF141EBD958DF1F9&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=32 As I lay down to sleep a few nights ago, I started to pray, petitioning God concerning family members. I quickly grew tired, my sense of urgency continued, a silent joy welled up within me. A strong understanding persisted that The Lord was hearing my prayers, knowing them fully, even though I would not be able to finish. And the thought flashed through me, “This is what happens throughout the day when we set our minds on Him!”. We don’t have to say things perfectly, nor even fully, for He is our fullness and the One to Whom we pray, “With groaning that cannot be uttered.” The Lord knew my expressions and intentions. Is not this intimacy the point at which we sensitively determine if we are about to ask amiss, or not? I mean, if our affirmation from our Lord is received by awareness of His communion with us, and therefore our communion with Him (that He hears and is moving as we speak and groan), dare we ask for the frivolous or for that which serves merely to prop up our egos? Truly, better is one day in His courts or one fading night as we sleep into an awakening of His will and tender care for us. In this comfort of knowing God is our everything, our prayers should explode, for this is dialogue reborn, we to God, we to one another, wills bound to God, our hearts bound by the will to be lights in a suffering world that longs to sleep in peace. Oh Grace received within our groanings, move us to compassion to serve those in need in matters of the body and Spirit! Jesus, true Resolution, all done your Name proclaims Mercy. Let God arise!

http://www.cbc.ca/radio2/cod/concerts/20090315sbell I have profiled a smattering of songwriter/singer Steve Bell's numbers. If those have blessed you, then here's a real treat. The above link from the CBC website features Steve and a few other performers at a concert in which several songs from his new album, "Devotion", were played. The link to each song is on the right-hand side. My favorite is #13, wow! Imagine a choir singing that one during your next communion service. It is soul-searching, a confession of faith, soulful, and joyful!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tYOz-turJ3g&feature=related Here, Bruce Cockburn touches on humanity’s question of the ages, “What is the soul of a man?” No neighbor can answer this. Wherever we go, the question is there. The searcher sees through the teeming of the masses and continues to ask the question. Flimsy answers like, “A man ain’t nothing but his mind” do not suffice. While Proverbs 23:7 says, “As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he", this an acknowledgment of the impact of one's thoughts. But are our thoughts, even the organic processes involved that assist these--is that it? What penetrates, fulfills, and answers is the fact that God is God, “There’s nothing but a burning light.” He is Light and our answer is in Him. The focus is off of us, therefore the burden is off of us, too. Christ raises us from our grave of paralyzing questions and spiritual death. He, within Himself, is the living answer, in Power, in Love, in certainty. Christ came to work with the same humanity that in its own vain imagination seems resolved to center only its own reasoning for meaning. He rose from the grave. His history marches toward the culmination of His reign. Meantime, people ask the same question. As God’s children, we have the answer. We don’t answer with a definition. We answer with its fulfillment: Christ has come to abide with us!

(I'll try to share sabbath jottings each Sunday. Here are a few things collected first on a McDonald's napkin, then during my PCA church service) Sunday’s Mixed Bag of Faith – March 7, 2010 Nicodemus, et al There are always men, small for their times, with big ideas, trying to climb. They want to see the latest crowd pleaser; when God touches them they start a’chasing, obliviously pleading, after the Savior, “Come to my house, “I have defrauded, now I will boast “only in You, Lord. “Come, have my food, “and when we’ve finished, “deliver yours.” How many folk of high position would give their right arm for the Kingdom of Heaven? Some understand this is what they must do; they count the cost, then get to praising, raising bare hands toward the Savior, “Stay in our homes, “We heard you knocking, “Now we will boast, “with joy, of your coming. “Receive our praise, “and adoration, “Sovereign Lord!” ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Let us turn our hearts toward Him, to be supple in His Grace. Hardened hearts must now be softened, weak hearts strengthened, courageous be made. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Pastor compared the clarity of God’s Grace to that of a sunny day. Then, he spoke of trials as being like clouds. These darken the sky, but we see and know that God is still here and with us. A narrative showed on the screen, “ ‘Even our highest thoughts of God he has to smash’—C S Lewis”. I jotted down, The time of testing is in the clouds, cut under Heaven, below the sun, blocking brilliance but not the light. It is not all dark, this is not night. Embrace, taste, see how the Lord is good. It is still day.
